Cheungchau Fishing Junks – 1920s
Posted: November 4th, 2009 | 4 Comments »I posted way back in 2008 on the Earnshaw Book’s reprint of Ivon A. Donnelly’s Chinese Junks and Other Native Craft which includes the lavish illustrations and watercolours reproduced in full colour along with an excellent introduction by Gareth Powell. I also posted on some details of Donnelly’s life and work. So I was quite pleased to come across this sketch of Donnelly’s entitled Fishing Junks off Cheungchau (Hongkong) the other day. It shows, I think that Donnelly was a rather accomplished artist. Cheungchau by the way is a small island off Hong Kong Island which has long been populated and a major fishing community. There is still a small fishing fleet that works out of Cheungchau though it’s mainly a tourist spot these days. This sketch of Donnelly’s is, I think, from 1924.
Hey Paul – Happy New Year . Nice Post! Where did you find the sketch ? Would you part with it ?? Would love to add it to my limited collection of grandfathers art . Meantime I will link to this post from my Donnelly blog.

It’s a print from an old copy of the China Journal of Science and Arts I found in Cligancourt flea market in Paris – a complete wreck so I gutted it for the pictures and ads. It’s not an original sadly. Still, if you want the print send me your address and I’ll post it to you – paul@accessasia.co.uk
Thanks Paul – I e mailed mailing address to you separately . I’m continually on the look out for his stuff! It does show up at jumble sales and flea markets tho I have yet to find anything there .
Paul , turns out that Donnelly’s brother Denis had a vacation home on Chungchau so Donnelly likely did this sketch while visiting !
