Some Posts on Columbia Road, Columbia Circle and Amherst Road – II – The Unusable Garage

Posted: May 18th, 2010 | No Comments »

Many houses in the External Roads Area had garages – for many Shanghailanders the ERA was simply seen as a long drive from downtown. This residence, once a single house and now typically multi-occupancy, sits on the corner of Columbia Road (Panyu Road) and Pingwu Road (no former name). The Shanghai penchant for putting a wall around anything has been in full effect but you can see the former garage with rooms above, for servants, that is now occupied. Originally it was presumably possible to drive your car in from the street – but then private cars disappeared from Shanghai’s streets for a few decades. Now they’re back perhaps someone will buy the house and reuse the garage?
