    Bonjour,
Auriez-vous quelques renseignements sur les Carlowitz, négociants à Hongkong, dans les années 1870 à 1880 ?
    Merci.

Here is a paragraphy from my Grandfather’s memoire (translated from German by me) mentioning the Aniline dyes:

Because the firm lost its Shangai hong due to WWI, we converted a large warehouse on Sichuan Road by the Suzhou Creek into an office building. While not particularly beautiful, it was a solid, 4-story building with large windows looking out to Szechuan Road. The ground floor was occupied by our important trade representatives for Zeiss optical supplies, the first floor by the import, insurance, and technical departments, the second floor by the export and so-called government departments, and the third floor by bookkeeping, finance and the private office. The top floor was not completely finished and rarely used. For a time, we used it as a laboratory for Swiss Aniline Dyes. I think we had about thirty German employees in Shanghai. I knew them all through correspondence, but had only previously met one, Max Chudzinsky, who trained with me in Hamburg and was now working in Shanghai’s Import Department.
