The Queen’s Royal Regiment and The East Surrey Regiment in China

Posted: May 26th, 2011 | 4 Comments »

A bit of military history today. I had cause recently to be digging around on the role of the East Surrey Regiment in China – they have at times up to the Second World War guarded the British Legation in Peking. Turns out the Surreys have a pretty good website with a bunch of photos recalling their times and exploits in both China and Hong Kong including some personal memoirs by veterans of the regiments. The site’s definitiely worth a browse for the maps, photos and recollections.

Have been searching for sometime to be able to join together information about my father’s military history. He was in China in the 1930’s and I am fortunate enough to have quite a lot of photographs. I am inspired to learn as much as I can about his time in The Queen’s Royal Regiment and why he was discharged in 1940 at the height of WWII.

Pauline – if you have any photos you might consider contacting the people at Visualising China at Bristol Uni who are collecting as many photos as possible – they can scan them for you and of course return them – visualisingchina.net/

Many thanks for the suggestion with regards to photos, I’ll get them sorted as best I can as some are not noted as to where they were actually taken and could possibly be taken in India as my Dad was also stationed in Queeta.

i have been doing some research on my father who served with the Queens regiment in China between 1930 and 1935. In spite of what I have already found it would be useful for anything else that might be out there. what I am able to share with any body are some photos that he took during those times
