Tientsin’s Hotel du Nord
Posted: November 27th, 2014 | 8 Comments »Came across this photograph the other day of the Hotel du Nord in Tientsin – it’s dated about 1900 and the picture appears to be of a frontage gate opening onto a courtyard type hotel. Given the presence of a curio shop next to the hotel entrance (very common at hotels where foreigners stayed and needed presents) and its Gothic and German signage I’m assuming this is in the German Concession. Of course the Hotel du Nord in Peking was much better known and features in any number of memoirs and reminiscences of the city but I can find no references to anyone staying in the Hotel Du Nord in Tientsin – perhaps it was just a fake hotel ripping of the better known Peking brand? Still there’s a huddle of rickshaw pullers outside so someone must have been staying there. Any information greatly received….
Hi There:
Although it may say Tientsin, it is actually Hotel du Nord, Peking. I can send you an image if you contact me.
Cheers

Thanks – that explains that little mystery then
das Photo zeigt den Souvenier-Shop in einem der Innenhöfe – das Hotel du Nord war ein riesiges Palasthotel und gehörte dem Bruder meines Grossvaters bis 1928, dann ist die Familie nach Australien ausgewandert.
thanks – do you have any other photos??
My father Luigi Barzini, a writer, passed by the Hotel du Nord in Peling in 1938. Actually it is the set of the beginning of a book of his: “Evasione in Mongolia.”
Hi, how are you? I am proofreading a travel notes by a Croatian doctor in the 1930s. And he mentioned the Hotel du Nord.
May I get some pictures of this hotel in Peking if you have?
I could not contact people in the comment area. I don’t know how things work on this website.

Hi! I am researching a great uncle of mine who had his dental clinic at the Hotel du Nord in 1900. I’d love any photos or other information about the Hotel. He was Vice Consul and was in and around Tiensin, Peking and Port Arthur in the 1890’s and 1900’s.
