Shanghai - coverA very eager plug for the excellent new book by HS Liu and Karen Smith, Shanghai: A History in Photographs 1842-Today, which is being officially launched in Shanghai this coming Saturday. I must confess to having provided a short foreword to the book, but the main reason for noting it is that it is a superb collection of photographs, mostly historic but with some specially commissioned photos of Shanghai today as well. Many of the older photos have not, to my knowledge, been published before and Liu and Smith did an amazing job digging into previously inaccessible or overlooked archives. I very much doubt a better collection of photographs of Shanghai’s history will appear anytime soon to beat this one.

Anyway, the authors are giving a talk on the book this week:
