Opium – Popular in Edinburgh

Posted: October 21st, 2009 | No Comments »

Opium bar Edinburgh.jpgI posted last year a couple of times on the sad fact that these days there are lots of bars and restaurants everywhere I go called ‘Opium’ or ‘The Opium Den’ but never have opium but always sell me either fancy food or the depressant of alcohol.  That’s how tame our world has become – no dope these days but free flow booze – when was the last time you heard of a riot and fighting by a bunch of people out for a night’s opium pipe or two?

Anyway to continue the theme here’s yet another Opium bar – this time in Edinburgh, along the Cowgate, just down from The Grassmarket. I popped in just to check but there was sadly no opium available (though a couple of blokes looked like they might be able to provide various chemicals upon request) among the racks of fizzy bottled lagers and alcopops. You’re not telling me those old graverobbers and ground breaking thinkers and scientists of Edinburgh never tried a bit of opium!
