The First Mrs Carl Crow – Herself a Great China Hand too

Posted: November 18th, 2015 | No Comments »

I thought we should post a picture of the first Mrs Carl Crow as she too was an intrepid China Hand at the start of the twentieth century…On 27 December 1912 Carl married Miss Mildred S Powers in Shanghai. Mildred had been a member of staff with the China Press newspaper before becoming Manager of the Underwood Typewriter Department at Dodwell and Company where she was in charge of the firm’s business in China and Japan. She was originally from Melancthon in Ontario, Canada, a town as equally rural as Crow’s Missouri hometown and having only been founded thirty years before Mildred was born. Crow must have met Mildred almost immediately upon his arrival in Shanghai – the two were the same age…

After having one child the two divorced in 1925…and I’ve told the story of the fascinating life Mildred went on too after Carl and the life her daughter had (both remaining deeply involved in China) previously on this blog (click here)
