Sue Anne Tay on Desheng Lu
Posted: December 8th, 2011 | 1 Comment »I like Shanghai street photographer Sue Anne Tay because she gets out into Shanghai – not just a few streets of the former French Concession, but the more gritty working class suburbs where there is (or increasingly ‘was’) a lot of good architecture. She, like me, spends a lot of time in Yangpu (Yangtzsepoo) and Hongkou (Hongkew) – basically what used to be the International Settlement’s Eastern District.
I’ve noted the destruction around Dalian Road (formerly Dalny Road) and Huimin Road (formerly Baikal Road) several times before (including here and here). Of course it continues apace – whole blocks of 1920s and 1930s housing have been cleared in the last two years with not a trace left – except Sue Anne seems to have found some trace including (and here I may be one of the few people to get very excited!!!!) 1930s bricks!!
Anyway – do check out her pics and story on Desheng Lu at her blog Shanghai Street Stores by clicking here.
Thanks, Paul. Someone told me that the houses are built in order. Desheng is, I guess, built in 1934. Do you know about the lane next to it? They should technically be older and older, in the 20s?
